Life Haven Visits Tahanang Walang Hagdanan After Typhoon Ondoy

Tahanang Walang Hagdanan in Cainta, Rizal is one of the many establishments damage by typhoon Ondoy. Like every other victim, TWH was damaged physically. The residences, work area, machines, tools, and materials for livelihood were all damaged. Life Haven did our own share of extending assistance to Tahanang Walang Hagdanan.

On October 1, 2009 Life Haven visited TWH and brought along personnel to assist with the checking of electrical lines and machines. We also brought goods to supplement their everyday needs and a medical team for their health concerns.

Like all other victims also, the ravages of typhoon Ondoy left emotional and psychological trauma to the residents of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan majority of whom are persons with disabilities. The Bayanihan spirit from and a visit by other persons with disabilities lifted their spirits.

We would like to extend our gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of this visit. ( Liza Aviso and family; Eric Dy's family and friends; friends of Joon Baltazar; Karla Henson and Ramos family; Abner Manlapaz and family; and all others)

July 11-12 Valenzuela IL workshop

On July 11-12 we held a two-day Independent Living workshop in Valenzuela City. The resource persons were Abner Manlapaz and Jun Bernandino. We have five participants:
Teody Auxilian from Karuhatan; May-ann Dao from Ugong; Erick Dy from Arty Subdivision; Karla Henson from Fortune 5; and Sophia Manlapaz from Fortune Village 2.

Teody has spinal cord injury C-5 level for around 10 years now. It was due to a vehicular accident, the bus he is in was rammed by a train.
May-ann has tri-polio affecting the lower extremities and one of her arms.
Erick also has spinal cord injury C-5 C-6 level. He was shot when he was robbed. He is entertaining the idea that it was a case of mistaken identity. The robbers thought he was carrying money in the paper bag which really contains pancit canton.
Karla is visually impaired due to macular degeneration .
Sophia is the wife of Abner. She has polio that affected both of her lower extremities. Sophia and Abner have two daughters, Alexa and Anne.

It was a successful workshop. Thanks to Ate Lon (sister of Teody) and Mama (mother of Karla) for hosting and providing the sumptous food. Thanks also to the PA's who assisted.

"Live Free" Fundraising Concert--A Success

"Live Free" Fundraising Concert-- A Success

The "Live Free" fundraising concert held on May 30, 2009 at Crossroad 77 was a considerable success. The "Live Free" fundraising concert aimed to raise fund to assure continuous provision of services for persons with disabilities. This concert was brought to you by Life Haven Inc. in cooperation with APD-SR.

Despite the heavy rain and traffic the spirit of the performers and all those who attended was not at any point dampened. The concert was opened by the sparkle band with an emotional rendition of the song "High". The sparkle band is composed of children with autism. The concert was in no way a competition for the performers yet every number was presented as if everyone was shooting for a million. The beautiful Gate performance Art Troupe had a very interesting performance punctuated with a drama that hushed everyone. The ballroom dancers of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan presented upbeat numbers of chacha and jive. The Rondalla On Wheels of Bahay Mapagmahal played a soothing piece of medley.

Juan Pablo Dream and Good Morning High 5's, the two mainstream bands which played in the "Live Free" concert, took the stage and did their thing with gusto. This wrapped up the night of entertainment, enlightenment, and awareness campaign.

An incidental fruit of the promotional efforts for the concert is worth mentioning here. Our media partners became interested not solely for the promotion of plugging of the concert but also about the sector of the persons with disabilities and Life Haven, Inc., in particular. ABS-CBN, GMA-7 and UNTV presented the talents of the performers, made interviews of the persons involved, and mentioned the services provided by an IL center (i.e. Life Haven).

Thanks to all sponsors and supporters.

Watch out for "Live Free 2"!

Tahanang Walang Hagdan Ballroom Dancers on Wheels

TAHANANG WALANG HAGDAN (TWH) BALLROOM DANCERS

Tahanang Walang HagdanI's Dance on Wheels started in 1990's as a form of therapy for emotional rehabilitation especially for our residents/workers who could not accept their physical disability. The first group of dancers initially tried the easy steps of folk dancing. it was in 1999 when they did ballroom dancing which was more challenging and attracted more dancers to participate. We have launched the first ballroom dancing for PWD's last November 17, 2007 through the event called " Steps for a Bright Future" which featured the TWH Dance on Wheels. TWH also organized the First Philippine Ballroom Dancing Championship last December 6, 2008 with the help of partner organizations which was preceded by a Wheelchair Ballroom Dancing workshop.

TWH takes pride in continuing this project for our beneficiaries through an established programs-Wheelchair Dance Program of TWHI. It gives healing and therapy, as well as, develops capabilities, making the most of what is left for PWD's. Their ability for dance is promising as our dancers are being prepared for further training for local and international competitions.

The TWH Ballroom Dancers on wheels will perform in the “Live Free!” – a fund raising concert presented by Life Haven Inc. and APDSR. The “Live Free!” fund raising concert is on May 30, 2009 (8:00 PM) at Crossroad 77 (Mother Ignacia St. corner Scout Reyes, Quezon City). Proceeds of this fund raising event will be used for the Independent Living services and activities of Life Haven for Persons with Disabilities. Request for support for the Live Free fundraising concert

Dear Sir/Madam:

Greetings from Life Haven.

Life Haven is a non-profit organization of persons with disabilities (PWD), duly registered with the SEC, guided by the Independent Living (IL) Philosophy and a frontrunner of the Independent Living Movement in the Philippines. We are working towards the empowerment of persons with disabilities with the goals of restoring self-respect, improving self-confidence, and promoting active participation on issues concerning the society to which we belong. It is our belief that persons with different types of disabilities will benefit from the Independent Living Movement, hence our cross-disability approach.

As part of our mission to provide continuous services to PWD, a fundraising concert entitled “Live Free” will be held on May 30, 2009. Proceeds of this event will be used to support our activities, sustain the services that we provide, and assist the Association of People with Disabilities-Sta. Rosa (APD-SR) in their IL-related programs. The concert will have as its main performer, the Beautiful Gate Performance Art Troupe from Malaysia. Two local PWD groups as well as two featured mainstream bands supportive of our cause are also slated to perform in the said concert. We are expecting an audience of at least 1,000. We have also enlisted support from broadcast, print, and online (YEHEY.com) media for ad string and promotions.

We would like to ask for your assistance by sponsoring the “Live Free” concert charity event. We believe that you becoming a sponsor will show your compassion and will make you an instrument of social change that will let persons with disabilities to have a life and enjoy that community life to the fullest. In return we will provide optimum merchandising and exposure for you or any product or company you want to endorse. Please email us at lifehaven@gmail.com for details of the sponsorship packages.

We recognize the fact that what we can give you is miniscule compared to what your support can contribute to the success of the “Live Free” concert.

We are looking forward to your favorable response. Thank you very much.
